An Overview

Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake, is a high altitude, shallow, freshwater lake located south of the Dhauladhar Range in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. This popular trekking destination is a glacial lake made from the snow melting from the Dhauladhar mountains. The Nyund Stream which accompanies trekkers through most of the trek forming little natural pools here and there is the outflow of the lake. Located at an altitude of 2950 meters above sea level, the water visibility of this lake is outstanding thanks to its shallow depth and fresh melting snow as a source. In fact, even the lake bed is clearly visible in some patches of the lake! There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on a hilltop overlooking the lake. It is a 13-kilometre hike from Kareri village to reach Kareri Lake. Kareri village is located about 30 kilometres from Dharamshala city and remains cut off due to heavy snowfall through most of the winters. The nearest town to this village is Ghera village, some 8 kilometres away. Kareri village has no hospitals, senior secondary schools, or even a barbershop! Villagers travel all the way till Ghera for these amenities. Kareri village- which is our base campsite- whose people and earthly architecture might leave an everlasting impression on you. It can be your passport to the hobby of trekking. It's a 3 days and 2 nights long schedule. One night at our base camp and another second night by the side of Lake. The lake and its surroundings lay untouched and pristine, allowing a healing experience away from toxic city air and modern schedules. Kareri village and lake will make you feel relaxed and make you fall hopelessly and irrevocably in love with Himachal!

Kareri Lake Trek Short Itineary

Day 1

Upon reaching Dharamshala early in the morning in a luxury AC Volvo bis from Delhi, we take our journey forward and drive the 30 kilometers towards Kareri. At Kareri, we go around exploring the village, learning the simple ways of life here and feast on some delicious home cooked meals. We finally end the day by retiring to our camps, spending the night under a billion beautiful stars.

Day 2

After waking up early and fresh, we finally head towards our destination- Kareri Lake. We trek 13 kilometers uphill with ample rest stops, admiring the different landscapes throughout. We start our trek walking by the Nyund River, chance upon some pristine natural pools, halt at Reoti, a campsite on the way known for its small dhaba for lunch before heading towards our final destination to finally witness the sun setting behind the majestic mountains surrounding the Kareri Lake. We end our hectic but splendid day by a piping hot plate of home cooked food before retiring to our camps.

Day 3

We wake up fresh and witness a spectacular sunrise and gorge on some wholesome breakfast before exploring the area surrounding the lake and visiting the ancient Shiv and Shakti temple. Soon, we begin heading downhill towards Kareri village. The hike will be easier and faster today since it will mostly be a descent and in no time we would have reached Kareri, packed into our vehicles and driven back to Dharamshala to catch our evening Volvo bus back to Delhi. This getaway may have been short, but will leave us with ample vivid memories that will fill our hearts and warm our souls.
