Lahaul Valley is a high-altitude valley located in the Himachal Pradesh state of India. It is situated between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal ranges and is known for its scenic beauty, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and trekking routes. The valley is home to several small villages and is predominantly inhabited by the Buddhist community. The valley is also a popular destination for adventure activities such as trekking, mountaineering, and skiing. Lahaul valley is the newest winter wonder that has become far more accessible to tourism, thanks to the inauguration of the Atal Tunnel. Lying on the other side of the Rohtang Pass, Lahaul is truly stunning. In the past, Lahaul Valley was often combined with a visit to the larger circuit of Lahaul and Spiti. However, there is more than enough to see and do in Lahaul on its own, making it an ideal destination for those who are short on time but still want to experience the arid beauty of mountains similar to those found in Spiti and Ladakh.

Lahaul Valley Itinerary

We start around 8 am in the morning from Manali, huddled together in our vehicles, and head off straight to the beautiful valley of Lahaul. To get here, we drive through the 9 km-long Atal Tunnel – which is recognized as the world’ s longest highway tunnel. The tunnel is built with ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 feet). Crossing the tunnel takes you into the Lahaul area. Suddenly the scenery is completely evolved and you ’ re now in the lap of massive mountains with intimidating beauty. Explore the Sissu region and continue the drive towards Gondhla village which is famous for the glacier view and the Himalayan ranges right in front of your eyes. Your stay will be in a beautiful campsite/homestay. We also take this day to acclimatize to the high altitude of Lahaul by drinking plenty of water and taking short walks around.

Today, we will explore the western part of Lahaul Valley. Our first stop will be at Tandi, which is the confluence of the Chandra and Bhagha rivers. Now, the river is called Chenab, which ultimately flows into Pakistan and the Arabian Sea. We continue towards Udaipur. Udaipur is a small town located in the Lahaul Valley and is known for its scenic beauty and traditional architecture. The town is home to several old Buddhist monasteries and is considered a spiritual hub for many locals. Visit the ancient Marikula Mata Temple, which is visited by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims and is rich in artistic quality. Now, we will visit Trilokinath. Trilokinath Temple is a Hindu temple located near the town of Udaipur. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the most important Hindu shrines in the region. The temple is famous for its intricate carvings and architecture and is a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. Visitors should be mindful of the local customs and traditions and respect the religious significance of the temple. After a full day of moving around, we finally call it a night at Gondhla.

Today, we will visit the northeastern part of Lahaul Valley, i.e, one of the highest regions of Himachal Pradesh at the Manali-Leh highway. Today ’ s day is not only taking you directly to Baralacha Pass. You ’ll be stopping at multiple places and enjoying many pit stops, including Keylong (headquarters of Lahaul Valley), Jispa, Deepak Tal, Zingzing Bar, and Suraj Tal. Suraj Tal is a highaltitude lake situated at an elevation of 4,800 meters above sea level. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and is considered one of the most picturesque lakes in India. The lake is considered as the third highest in India and the 21st highest in the world and is revered as the "lake of the Sun God." Baralacha Pass, on the other hand, is a high mountain pass located at an elevation of 4,892 meters above sea level. It is situated on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The Baralacha Pass is also known as "the pass with crossroads on the summit." Now, we return to our homestay/camps for a night stay.

To celebrate our last day in Lahaul Valley, we depart from Gondhla to Sissu for a short trek to the beautiful Sissu Waterfall. The trek also offers opportunities for birdwatching, as the area is home to several species of birds. After the trek, we continue our journey back to Manali via the Atal Tunnel and Solang Valley. We reach Manali in the evening (5-7 pm), only to head back home with a heart full of happy memories. *Buffer Day- It is important to have an extra day as any bad weather conditions or landslides may delay your journey.
