Triund Trekking

An Overview

Triund (2,975 meters) is the crown jewel of Dharamshala, situated in the laps of Dhauladhar mountains, it has the perfect view of the Dhauladhar mountains on one side and Kangra valley on the other. Triund is a very popular trekking spot. Triund attracts a lot of tourists every year from India and all over the world. Triund is 18 km from Dharamshala, the trail is 7 km from Dharamkot and passes Galu Devi temple. From this temple, it takes around 3 hours to reach Triund. The last one kilometer is popularly known as the “22 curves” as it has 22 tiring curves before you finally reach Triund. The starting point of the Triund trek is Galu, however, there are many options to reach Galu. Either you can hire a taxi from Mcleod Ganj till Galu or you can start the trek right from Mcleod Ganj. Trek can also be started from Bhagsu Nag. From Galu, there is an unambiguous byway which goes through a beautiful forest of oak, deodar, and rhododendron. This entire stretch is perfect for birdwatchers, as the forests here are literally swarming with various kinds of songbirds. Although it is best if you can hike all the way but if you can not hike all the way then you can hire a horse/pony and enjoy the ride. The best time for trekking is from March until June in the first part of the year and September till December in the second half of the year. Though it is rainy in June and July, still trekking is possible, the meadow is lush green presenting out of this world vista. Triund offers magnificent view of Dhauladhar Matterhorn or the Gauri Junda (4916 m) which is the highest peak in Dharamshala region. Moon Peak (4632 m), the most visible and attractive landmark in Dhauladhar Himalayas, will be right in front of you. Triund trek is surely an enriching experience for the body and the soul.

Triund Trek Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Dharamshala, drive towards Mcleodganj. Trek commencement from Mcleodganj or Galu Temple to Triund. After reaching Triund, briefing about the ranges, passes and peaks visible from Triund. Bonfire, dinner, night stay in tents at Triund.

Day 2

Morning descend after breakfast from Triund to Galu Temple and then either walk or drive from Galu Temple to Mcleodganj depending upon the conditions. Drive to Dharamshala. Departure to particular places.
