Offbeat Tirthan Valley Road Trip

Everyone with an affinity to travel to the mountains has heard of Parvati Valley, Kullu Valley, Solang Valley, Sangla Valley, or Spiti Valley. But how many people know what a gem Tirthan Valley is! Also known as Banjar Valley, located in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, Tirthan is one of the few lesser-explored valleys of India, with a huge potential for travel and tourism. Tirthan Valley is not only home to the Great Himalayan National Park, but also some of the quaintest towns and villages in perhaps the entire Himachal Pradesh!

Come along as we have an epic road trip, exploring some of the most beautiful spots around the area including Shangarh, Pandrik Rishi Lake, Jibhi, Jalori Pass, Serolsar Lake, Bahu, and Gadagushain. We guarantee that you will not find this unique itinerary anywhere else because it is self-curated by team Trekatribe.

Itineraries

Day 1

Date : May 14, 2022

Time : 7:00 am

CHANDIGARH-SHANGARH (270 km; 8 hrs)

This epic Road Trip will start from ISBT Chandigarh in a comfortable Tempo Traveller. Enjoy the picturesque ride on the country roads of Himachal as we head for Shangarh. Shangarh is a beautiful Himalayan village situated in Great Himalayan National Park which is a UNESCO world heritage site. After feasting on some dinner, we spend the night tucked in in a comfortable homestay, ready for the day ahead.

Day 2

Date : May 15, 2022

SHANGARH SIGHTSEEING AND RAILA TWIN TOWERS

After experiencing a blissful morning, we stroll through the beautiful vast green meadows of Shangarh. Visit the Shangchul Mahadev temple famous for its pagoda shape and carvings. We explore the hidden Barshangarh waterfall. In the afternoon, we will drive towards Raila village and witness the spectacular twin towers (Kothi) of Raila. After a full day of moving around, we finally return back to our homestay at Shangarh.

Day 3

Date : May 16, 2022

SHANGARH- PUNDRIK RISHI LAKE- JIBHI

From Shangarh, we then drive towards Deohari village to explore Pundrik Rishi Lake. Pundrik Rishi Lake is a sacred lake deep inside the Sainj Valley in the Great Himalayan National Park. It is an hour trek away from Deohari village. It is an enchanting lake that is sure to leave you awestruck! After spending some amazing moments in this peaceful lake, we head towards Jibhi which is the main tourist place of Tirthan Valley. Jibhi is a beautiful place situated by the banks of the Tirthan River. Famous for its multiple waterfalls and freshwater trout, one can even head to the river to try their hand at angling! Explore the local market in the evening and after dinner, we hit our comfortable beds after these meanderings.

Day 4

Date : May 17, 2022

JIBHI- JALORI PASS- SEROLSAR LAKE- JIBHI

Time to explore some of the highest inhabited regions of Tirthan Valley. We first visit Jalori Pass at 3,134 m via Shoja village. With a temple of Budhi Nagin set atop the pass, this is one of the most scenic spots to witness snowcapped peaks on all sides. Jalori Pass serves as the starting point for the trek towards the majestic Serolsar Lake. The distance from Jalori Pass to Serolsar Lake is just about 6 kilometers. It is a very easy hike, taking only 2-3 hours to complete. After basking in the beauty of the lake, we head back to Jibhi. In the evening, visit the Jibhi waterfall. This waterfall is known for its tricky walk with slippery stones, but it is absolutely worth the effort as the views you will be welcomed with, are unlike any other! With the fresh glacial water cascading through rocks, forming pools of crystal clear blue waters, this is perhaps one of the most beautiful waterfalls India has to offer! And the best part? Not a lot of people have found out about it yet, so your Instagram pictures are going to be amazing like never before! After spending time at the waterfall, we head back for dinner and a night's stay at Jibhi.

Day 5

Date : May 18, 2022

JIBHI- BAHU- GADAGUSHAIN

Today after breakfast, we drive towards the eastern interiors of Tirthan Valley. Our first stop will be Bahu village. Bahu is a beautiful hamlet. We hike 2 km towards the Balu Nag Temple from the Bahu pond. The breathtaking trail leads to Balu Nag temple perched on the mountain amidst the deodar trees. Balu temple is a peaceful temple surrounded by evergreen cedar trees on all sides. This temple is considered sacred and many local people visit it each day. Now, we drive towards the last village of Tirthan Valley i.e. Gadagushain. This is a hidden paradise located on the boundary of Mandi (Seraj) and Kullu district separated by the river stream. Dinner and night's stay at a beautiful homestay.

Day 6

Date : May 19, 2022

GADAGUSHAIN-CHANDIGARH (270 km; 8 hrs)

It’s finally time to bid adieu to the magical and mesmerizing landscapes of Tirthan Valley. After breakfast, we hike to the hidden waterfalls of Gadagushain. Around noon, we settle in and drive back to Chandigarh. You will reach back Chandigarh around 9 pm. The trip end here with happy memories to cherish throughout our lifetime.

It is important to have an extra day as any bad weather conditions or landslides may delay your journey. In case another day is utilized, you need to pay ₹ 2500 for buffer day expenses.

What should I wear/carry in Tirthan Valley?

– Inner Thermals (winters only)
– Warm Jacket
– 2x Trek Pants/Jeans
– A fleece jacket or windcheater jacket or windproof jacket to prevent the winds
– A good sturdy pair of shoes
– A 50-65 L backpack (Do not carry suitcases or trolley bags please)
– Cotton socks (Extra pairs)
– Woolens 2 sets (Sweatshirts/Fleece/pullovers/warm hoodie)
– Carry a cap and Sunscreen Lotion to protect yourself from direct sunlight as it is harsh in this region to protect yourself from UV rays
– Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun
– Hand gloves are a must-have in the months of October to February.

Other Guidance

  • Travelers are reminded that there is a 15 kg limit on personal luggage for all trips.
  • Cameras, whether video or film, needed to be protected against the severe cold either in a warm pouch or the interior pockets of your clothing. Do not keep your camera in your backpack at higher elevations.
  • No insurance is provided during the trip of any kind.
  • When you travel, please never litter.
  • Remember – “Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints”. So, keep the mountains clean and green.
  • Aspirins and Paracetamols are highly recommended for headaches because they also thin the blood that will help improve circulation & oxygen delivery to the body.  Strong painkillers are not recommended as they can suppress respiration.
  • Personal expenses of any kind will not be entertained.

REFUND & CANCELLATION POLICY

  • Cancellation of booking of tour 31 days or more before the date of Departure will result in a 20% deduction in the cost of the tour.
  • Cancellation of booking of tour 21-30 days before the date of Departure will result in a 40% deduction of the cost of the tour.
  • Cancellation of booking of tour 11-20 days before the date of Departure will result in 60% deduction of the cost of the tour.
  • Cancellation of booking of tour 6-10 days before the date of Departure will result in 80% deduction of the cost of the tour.
  • Cancellation of booking of tour 1-5 days before the date of Departure will result in a 100% deduction of the cost of the tour.
