An Overview

Trek to Chandrashila peak (4,130 m ) is an awakening trek in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Chandrashila peak trek best time is in the month of April to November. Ukhimath is the nearest town from the base camp. Chandrashila peak trek length is 26 Km. Chandrashila peak trekking offers 360° Himalayan view. Chandrashila is the summit of Tungnath temple. It is located at a height of about 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level. This peak provides a spectacular 360-degree view of the Himalayas, especially Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks. Deoria Tal is a beautiful lake located about 2.5 km from Sari village. It is situated at an altitude of about 2438 meters. The path is a lush green expanse which is surrounded by snow-covered mountains in the background. It is like a fairytale lake where one can occasionally find animals and birds drinking sparkling water from the lake. It is renowned for its camping site and it is a bird watchers paradise. The water of the lake is pristine in its beauty and is most famous for reflection of the surrounding snow-covered peaks of Chaukhamba & Kedarnath groups of peaks especially at dawn & dusk which enhances its beauty. Trek to Rohini Bugyal is filled with the fragrance of mixed forests which include oak trees and pine as well as the lush green and snowy surroundings. It is a complete escape from the busy world. Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples and is located at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level.

Quick Facts About Chandrashila Peak

  • Chandrashila Peak literally means "Moon Rock". According to one of the popular legend, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance.
  • Tungnath is the highest Shiva Shrine among the Panch Kedar temples. The arm of Lord Shiva came out at this place as per Kedarnath myth.
  • As per mythology, Deoria Tal is the same lake where Pandavas were asked queries by Yaksha.

Chandrashila Peak Trek Itinerary Via Rohini Bugyal

Arrival in Haridwar. Drive from Haridwar to Saari village, Ukhimath (Approx. 7-8 hours) and Trek towards Deoria Tal. Briefing, bonfire and night stay in Deoria Tal camps.
Deoria Tal to Rohini Bugyal - Trek of 8 km (5-6 hours approx.) Day 2 starts with a breakfast at Deoria Tal and then trek to Rohini Bugyal. Your trek to Rohini Bugyal is filled with the fragrance of mixed forests which include oak trees and pine as well in the lush green & snowy surroundings. If you are among the lucky few, one can spot the beautiful local bird “Monal”. Some trekkers have also spotted deer in the vicinity. As one enjoys the beautiful view of the path strewn with beautiful flowers, gardens, the heart yearns to sing along with the countryside birds as they chirp & sing. Overnight stay and bonfire at Rohini Bugyal.
Rohini Bugyal to Chopta - Trek of 7 km (5-6 hours approx.) Day 3 trek is towards Chopta. As one walks up and down through the trail, one crosses and witness different varieties of forests like Oaks, Maple, Rhododendrons, etc. Once you reach Chopta one can unwind & take some rest and get re-energized after taking a cup of tea & snacks. Night Stay in Camps.
Chopta to Tungnath (Shiva Temple), Chandrashila Top and back to Chopta -Trek of 8 km (7-8 hours approx.) After having morning breakfast we will go ahead towards Tungnath. Tungnath temple peak at an altitude of 3680 m. is known to be the highest Shiva Shrine in the world. One can soak in the immense peace & tranquility of the place. From Tungnath peak we will go to Chandrashila top, which is at an altitude of 4130 m. One can enjoy the most naturally breathtaking & beautiful vistas of the Kedar, Chaukhamba and other peaks in the vicinity. One can also view the peak of Bandarpoonch as well. Green slopes cover both sides of the peak. One can have a refreshing tea break while resting on the bulky stone shaped dining tables along the return path to Chopta. Back at Chopta base camp, one can relax as trekking comes to an end. Briefing, bonfire and night stay in Chopta camps.
Chopta to Haridwar (Drive of approx. 8-9 hours) The last day of the itinerary consists of having a heavy breakfast and tea, and then driving back to Haridwar for your return journey with happy memories.
